Hunter's Star
You will need the Rapid Fire Petite Hunter's Star Ruler
Your prep work is outlined below -- please come to class prepared.
You can choose to buy fabric for a quilt, any size, based on the fabric requirements below. These are based on a two-colour quilt. However, if you wish to make your quilt scrappy, you can divide the fabric requirements among as many fabrics as you like, keeping in mind that half of the fabric
should be light/medium values and the other half medium/dark. For a fabric to be suitable, you must be able to cut an 8" square from it as well as a
1 3/4" x 20" strip and a 2 1/4" x 20" strip.
NOTE: THESE REQUIREMENTS DO NOT INCLUDE BORDERS AND BINDING. SIZES ASSUME YOU WILL ADD A TOTAL OF 16" IN BORDERS
Large Lap Size - 35 - 8" blocks
2m light and 2m dark
Twin Size - 54 - 8" blocks
2.55m light and 2.55m dark
Queen Size - 110 - 8" blocks
4.6m light and 4.6m dark
King Size - 144 - 8" blocks
6m light and 6m dark
Other Supplies:
- Rapid Fire PETITE Hunter Star Ruler (the pattern is included with the ruler)
- Mary Ellen's Best Press
- Rotary cutter and 24" ruler
- Neutral thread for piecing
- Sewing Machine in good working order with new size 80 piecing needle and a 1/4" foot
- Pins, thread snips and other standard sewing supplies
Preparation:
Wash your fabric and iron using liberal amounts of Mary Ellen's Best Press -- the starch is a very important part of preparing for this class. Do not omit this step.
THESE INSTRUCTIONS ASSUME YOU ARE MAKING A TWO COLOUR QUILT WITH 8" SQUARES
The cutting below will be plenty to get you started in the class, but bring your fabric because you may progress faster and want to keep sewing.
Come to class with ONE 8" width of fabric strips cut from your light and your dark, and subcut these into 8" squares. Carefully cut these squares
along one diagonal to make each into two triangles.
Cut (3) 1 3/4" strips each of light and dark, and (3) 2 1/4" strips of light and dark.
