So, I have a new sewing machine. Now what?



This course is designed for someone who has inherited or been gifted a sewing machine without any guidance or instruction. In this class we will will learn how the parts of the machine work, how to thread your machine, wind a bobbin and sew a straight line. We will learn to follow a basic pattern in order to complete a lined cushion cover complete with zipper. The class will focus on introductory skills common to all sewing machines.

Now What? Introduction to Sewing Machine Operation -A functional sewing machine with it's instruction manual. Most manuals are available online. - 2 bobbins for your machine - a new 80/12 Microtex needle -thread -thread snips -pins -we will discuss fabrics, zippers and threads needed for the class project during the first class. Please do not purchase these items prior to the class. If you have something you are interested in using, bring this to the first class and we will determine if they are appropriate for the class project. -thread snips -seam ripper NOTE: Class kit containing cushion insert, 0.5m of fusible fleece and pattern will be available. Price for the kit is $40. Please do not purchase the following items until after the first class as we will discuss fabric and thread selection during the first class. Fabric: 0.5m of quilting cotton 22" coil zipper to coordinate Thread: 50 wt cotton to blend with fabric Frixion pen; Basic sewing kit: Pins, seam ripper, thread snips, etc. Bring your sewing machine, in good working order, with foot control, power cord, all accessories and manual. If your machine is not in good working order, please bring it in for a tune-up several weeks before class. If you don't have the manual, often they are available for download.
